La marcha real ("The Royal March") is the national anthem of Spain. It is one of the few national anthems in the world to have no official lyrics.

The origins of the anthem, one of the oldest in the world, are unknown. The melody was first printed in a document dated 1761 and entitled Libro de Ordenanza de los toques militares de la Infantería Española (The Spanish Infantry's Book of Military Bugle Calls), by Manuel de Espinosa. Here it is entitled La Marcha Granadera ("March of the Grenadiers"), though no composer's name is given.

In 1770, King Carlos III declared the Marcha Granadera to be the official "Honour March", thereby according it a place at public and ceremonial events. Because it was always played at public events attended by the royal family, Spaniards soon came to regard the Marcha Granadera as their national anthem and called it the Marcha Real, or "Royal March".

Under the Second Spanish Republic (19311939), El Himno de Riego replaced La Marcha Real as the national anthem of Spain. At the conclusion of the Civil War, however, dictator Francisco Franco restored La Marcha Real as the country's national anthem, under its old title of La Marcha Granadera.

Franco lyrics:

English Translation:

Long live Spain, raise your arms, sons
of the Spanish people,
who are rising again.

Glory to the Fatherland that knew how to follow,
over the blue of the sea the path of the sun.

Glory to the Fatherland that knew how to follow,
over the blue of the sea the path of the sun.

Spain triumphs! The anvils and wheels
sing to the rhythm
of the hymn of the faith.

Spain triumphs! The anvils and wheels
sing to the rhythm
of the hymn of the faith.

Together with them let's stand and sing
the new powerful life of labour and peace.

Together with them let's stand and sing
the new powerful life of labour and peace.

Long live Spain, raise your arms, sons
of the Spanish people,
who are arising again.

Long Live Spain, raise your arms, sons
of the Spanish people,
who are arising again.

Glory to the Fatherland that knew how to follow,
over the blue of the sea the path of the sun.

Glory to the Fatherland that knew how to follow,
over the blue of the sea the path of the sun.

    Happy birthday spain!!

    Greeting from Japan.

  • @Jindotennis Never were the lyrics of Franco´s Anthem. Simply, he liked. Those lyrics never were official. "Marcha Real" was restored by Franco. This lyrics were wrote by poet José María Pemán in 1928 (Spanish Civil War was In 1936, Franco was later). Franco restored Spanish Anthem removed by the Communists in the Spanish Republic ("Himno de Riego"). Franco impeded the Nazi attack on Gibraltar. Franco was never in the Nazi side. Spain was neutral and anti-communist.Hitler helped Franco thats all

  • @SAACAAS Communists didn't remove anything. Learn to differentiate between republican and communist, stupid

  • @Roddo96 creo que no hay mejor forma de decirlo que esa

  • I feel ashamed that Spain, today, is associated with this fascist thing as easily by foreigners.

  • I wish I was from Spain...FUCK THE UNITED STATES

  • this is not the real anthem of Spain, this is the anthem of Franco, the dictator after the civil war, mother, I am Spanish and this is a great blasphemy.

  • @TSR1989RN Well but the Salve Marinera is just one of the songs of the spanish navy. The anthem I mean is the Himno de la Escuela Naval Militar.

  • @RTO41 On Anthems: i take it you mean "Salve Marinera"?

By Coincidence it's the first one i found on YT, but at the time put to one side in Watch later, as my 1st thought was to try the National Anthem (that this version of Marcha Real mentions the sea in it's lyrics i was all set to use this [till i with your help i confirmed this version was Franco era]), i have to admit Salve Marinera's Lyrics do fit better than the Alfonso Era National Anthem's Lyrics do.
