Can't afford those expensive pedals? Build them yourself! The pedal clones featured here are the ProCo RAT distortion, the MXR Blue Box Octave/Fuzz, the Boss SG-1 Slow Gear and the Electro Harmonix Small Clone. Each pedal's circuits have been modified with vintage/new parts to improve on the newer circuits. Some of these mods are my own, some are sourced from the net.

If you're interested in doing this yourself, here are a few indispensable links:

www.tonepad.com - Good site that sells ready made PCBs. The RAT and the Blue Box come from here.
www.buildyourownclone.com - Sells full kits. I prefer to source everything myself, but if you want a package, this is the site to use.
www.generalguitargadgets.com - Pricey, but better quality.
www.mouser.com - Parts
www.digikey.com - More parts
www.smallbearelec.com - Parts, hard to find ICs and enclosures for your pedals. Also sells replacement parts for Sovtek/EHX and others.

Also featured is the APC, which is a squarewave single oscillator synth that is housed in a toffee tin. I am making some other modules for it, so stay tuned.

  • heeeyy is that a circuit bent speak and spell in the back ground? awesome!

and i had a question, why is the output of the rat going in to the output of the boss overdrive?

  • @runishit I hate the way Boss pedals have their input and outputs, so all my pedals are built with reversed input/output.

  • How well does that RAT work with a bass? Same results as with a guitar?

  • @norsktorskemann Yes, the RAT and any distortion works excellent on a bass as well as any other instrument. For distorting bass, I would recommend a Big Muff, though. You'll never go back to any other distortion. I have a Black Russian model that I modded to green Russian specs. I removed the diodes and installed jumpers, and the thing destroys you.

  • I love the Blue box. I'm a big fan of those farty sounding fuzzes.

  • the octave down effect needs to go before the distortion

  • are they all true bypass?

  • nice gear...but tune that thing first bro...it's harsh on the ears...

  • @casiotone1331 oooooooooooooh, that´s kinda cool!

  • i see modded speak and math?

  • lolllll that last thing was hilarious! i want one of those.

  • @dratband Maybe an embedded microprocessor with frequencies stored in memory that compare to the input signal? This would be hard because there is more than just the fundamental frequency vibrating on a guitar.
