Waniyetu Wowapi kin, or the Winter Count, was a pictographic mnemonic device which kept oral traditions in chronological order. The year was given a name to remember it by, rather than a number.
Battiste Good's winter count reached as far back as 901 AD, with a yearly entry starting with 1700 AD.
The John K. Bear Winter Count reaches back as far as 1681.
