Cool. I just picked one up with only 1300 original miles on it. Am cleaning the carb now will let you know what happens. I've heard these bikes are very reliable.
i had the exact bike in the mid eighties, it was my first dirt bike.. That thing was so reliable, I rode the hell out of it and it NEVER let me down..
same thing happened when my throttle got stuck open once, thought i threw a piston ring so i rebuilt the entire engine. good thing too cause previous owner used silicone to make a side case gasket and it was breaking down inside the engine. engine turned out to be just running really lean, the needle clip had broken a little loose and air mixture port was clogged.
i have a 1973 honda xl175 and i was tuning hte carb and i got ir running perfect so i got all my gear on to go for a test run and my actuial kick start piece broke where it connects on to the shaft so i tried bumperstarting it but the clutch is a multi-disc wet clutch so the motor has to be running for it to grab and let go. the bike just slows down then it grabs when your allmost stopped. also when your kicking it over and you dont pul back it smashes the kick shaft.
ive got a 78 xl175 and my kick starter shaft broke so i have to push start it but know the clutch is not grabbing its not even turning over any clue???????

@Arcticcatrlz the same thing happened to me.. i just shove it in 2nd and role it down a hill to start it. your clutch pads are probably done.
