@smthsmthcool Haha, the poor Rafales didn't even get off any flares! Also the enemy ground defence system was not able to see that a group of planes flying 300 MpH were not the fighter group..

@utaMAN12345 Right now military planners are much more impressed by stealth and electronic attack than by raw speed. The main reason is that it is very difficult to deploy weapons at supersonic/hypersonic speeds. The obvious exception being directed energy weapons.

@ogdocvato It was a flawed design. Was born as a carrier aircraft, and ended up having a predicted landing speed that prevented safe carrier operations.

Why was the A-12 Avenger II canceled? I read that the DoD spent more than $4.5 billion on R&D to McDonnell Douglas and General Dynamics (now parts of Boeing and Lockheed Martin respectively). Maybe the navy should have paid for further R&D on that airplane?
