After fourteen years and 250 rejection slips, Lisa Alther got her big break when her debut novel, Kinflicks, was accepted and published, becoming an instant bestseller. She has been writing ever since. Alther remembers growing up not having a clear sense of who she was or where she fit in, and she wrote in order to understand herself. Looking back at her writing career, Alther reflects, "I've got an awful lot figured out now; there are not many musty corners of myself that I don't know about . . . I've answered the questions I can answer, and the others are unknowable and part of the mystery of life and I've kind of let them go."
