For those that want some perspective. Al is some clown that runs a plastic countertop business. The he has lost a lot of work to granite guys. This is a joke.
You would get the same reading off my iPhone.
He has an ax to grind. DORK!

@ramandu Very true! lol They call it "roe ent gen". It's pronounced "rent-gen". lol Also, they use a pancake. If they forgot to divide correctly, the pancake can put off loads more counts than a tiny GM.

Granite countertops are not dangerous, but it is a good way to creep out the BMW driving, iPhone using, McMansion owning yuppie crowd when they brag about their homes. "Oh, your granite countertops are very nice, it's good that you don't mind the extra radiation".

RENT-GIN!

lol fearmongering. oh noes, 1 mili-rowtuhjin lawl

In this case, he is using the pancake probe, that is installed in the bottom of the unit.
-
where's the probe?

Thanks for chiming in stoneadvice. I guess Al has got you guys by the short hairs with this issue. Had I any doubt before, your post removed it.

The amount of radiation needed to kill bacteria would kill a human allmost instantly. ;-)
This is sad. These people can't even pronounce Roentgen and they're telling people that millirads are dangerous....lol...Please do your own research before you buy into the majority of this fear mongering online.

This guy showed up on a radiation meter forum tonight saying the same crap. He was soundly thrashed and issued some sort of apology.
He is a newbie to the field and a rank amature.

But the fellow that commented on the bacteria in granite countertops is almost right. There are billions of bacterial living in and on a granite countertop. NASA did a study and found 100,000 bacteria per gram of stone living INSIDE the granite.
And there is a granite shop website that says that the granite has toxic materials inside that kill the bacteria. Wrong accordingto NASA, but seems pretty stupid to claim your product has toxic chemicals in it!

The idiot that said that this is a metal detector is almost clever until the realize how easy it is to prove he is lying. Look at the scale, it reads mR/hr. Plus a one minute search on Google will show you pictures of the LENi Geiger counter.
His comments show you how far the stone industry will go to discredit anyone that speaks out on this issue.
The comments on the cell phone again show their stupidity or willingness to lie. Cell phones give of electromagnetic radiation, not ionoizing.

I leave these comments up to show not only the character of the stone industry, but their intelligence. Let's look at the weak attempts to discredit what you can see with your own eyes.
First off, you don't have to "set" a geiger counter, that is done once a year at a lab. This meter was calibrated in March of this year.
As to using the use of stones for centuries as a arguement, well they also used lead water pipes and lead paint. And the doctors once bled people to cure disease.....
