A tribute to John "Jack" Gilbert, the silent matinee idol whose career collapsed during the talkie era and he and Greta Garbo were one of the most popular love idols of silent cinema.

  • The orchestra heard is Isham Jones & His Orchestra, vocal refrain by Billy Scott, New York, May 16, 1932.

  • Gilbert and I have the same birthday and the actor that played his father in "The Big Parade (Hobart Bosworth) had the same birthday as my then girlfriend.

  • I saw "The Big Parade" in New York's Radio City Music Hall with a LIVE Orchestra; the place was about 10% filled; hid daughter introduced the film and plugged her book about her father.

The Big Parade, in its initial release was a bigger hit than "Gone With The Wind" in ITS initial release.

The Big Parade is one of the greatest movies ever made . . . it does have some weak point but ultimately it does tear at your heart strings and its incredibly dramatic where the story can be told visually.

  • @bigcity233 Gilbert re-signed with MGM for $5,000 a week for three years about six months before the stock market crash; even if he'd lost all his money in the crash, he certainly wouldn't have been on the street.

With the coming of sound, Gilbert was still cast in regular releases of "A" movies largely with good supporting casts and solid production values; for some reason he just didn't "take."

"Downstairs" is probably his best film from this period with "Fast Workers" with Lloyd Nolan, last

  • I think John Gilbert may have gotten a raw deal from the movie moguls. He should have been given more of a chance. And maybe Gilbert could have done more to salvage his career. The great song was written by Dana Suesse, who was also an accomplished pianist. The Stork Club Orchestra - nice arrangement. Sherman Billingsly dictated the music and style of music to be played in his nightclub.

  • Excellent!
