I stood with my hands on my hips, looking myself over in the full length mirror, studying my new outfit. I was wearing a navy blue boy tank over a red floral summer dress. Mike had taken me shopping yesterday. I had tried to hide my excitement, but I couldn't help myself. It had been awhile since I'd gotten new clothes. Mike and I were going to a bonfire on the beach tonight to meet up with a few of his friends.
I was a little nervous, but as long as Mike was there, I thought I'd be fine.

The sky was darker than I had expected and the water was a dark shade of blue. The air was chilly and smelled of the salty water. Pelicans floated on swells while seagulls flocked about on the sand. We picked our way down the beach, Mike leading the way to a ring of logs. There was a fire circle already set up, filled with black ashes in the center. A few of Mike's friends began gathering broken branches off the beach and soon had a teepee-shaped construction built atop the old cinders.
"So, tell me what I've missed out on," Mike said as we took our seats on the logs, breaking me from my thoughts. I shrugged, turning my gaze from the blackened fire pit to Mike's face. He sat still, waiting for me to divulge my life's story, but I really wasn't sure of what I could say.
"What do you want to know?" I asked, nervously tucking my hair behind my ears.
"I don't know, just how have you been?" he said. "What have you been up to since you left?"
His probing questions were making me feel a little uneasy. I hated talking about myself, even if it was to Mike. "I don't know," I giggled self-consciously. "Just living life, I guess."
"Well that sounds exciting," he replied, his voice heavy with sarcasm. I rolled my eyes and shoved him lightly.
"What can I say?" I laughed softly. The sky was darkening and the glow from the flames grew brighter, illuminating our faces from the shadows. I could see the small grin on his face as he sat beside me, his eyes fixed on me. It felt kind of weird, holding someone's attention like this. I felt like I wasn't nearly interesting enough for him to solely focus on me.
"So, what have you been up to?" he asked. "Do you still write?"
"Yeah, when I find time," I sighed, thinking about my notebook and guitar that I had to leave back in LA. "What about you?" I asked. "What have you been up to?"
He filled me in on everything that was currently going on in his life. He was actually a very fascinating person. Every one of his stories captivated me. We had been talking for hours now and it was getting darker as the sun began to sink, causing streaks of pink and orange light to stretch over the horizon. I was suddenly struck with an idea.
"Do you want to walk down the beach with me?" I asked hopeful.
"Sure," he grinned, quickly getting to his feet. We began to make our way down the beach and when we started to get tired, sat down on the white sand. He wrapped his arm around me, pulling me close. I could feel his eyes on me, just watching as I gazed at the setting sun. Just when I thought this moment couldn't get any better, he asked me a question I had not anticipated.
"So, how are your brothers?"
