My One Touch Ultra meter gave a blood glucose reading of 334 at 10:40 a.m., less than an hour after a 99 reading at 9:46 a.m. I didn't think the 334 reading was correct so I checked my blood glucose again at 10:51 a.m. and the result was 117. If I had given myself insulin based on the 334 reading I could have gone into insulin shock! Be careful if you get a high reading on your meter - always retest!

  • i just tested and its 96 i told my doctor and he said that's a normal reading...but if its normal why do i feel dizzy when its around that mark..??

  • @Baby1990f there are two reasons that I can think of. First, it is possible that the 96 was a false high. Has happened to me...test immediately again and get a result in the 50's. But also a possibility that your blood sugars typically run high, and for you 96 is on the (very) low side of "usual". If that is the case, you'll "feel" that it is low, but for someone who has blood sugars more in control (say an A1c measurement in the 5's or 6's) then 96 will feel fine.

  • maybe you had a blood sugar spike...that happens all the time to me...for example my blood sugar was 489 when i check in the morning and when i check about 15 minutes later it was 302. it can happen and it will

  • Thanks, but no, 99 at 9:46 am, 334 at 10:40 am, and 117 at 10:51 am strongly suggests that the 334 reading was false. My advice stands...always retest when you get an unexpected result...don't administer insulin based on only one check! I've tested my BG more than 100k times since I was diagnosed in 1982, so I've seen plenty of false results. Good luck.

  • @carrera993

Whoops my fault...if you had administered insulin, I see...

  • Yup...

  • I had this exact same problem with one touch. I now use Accu chek it's much better

  • @DesireeandDiabetes I've made the exact same mistake from the same "high sugar" fingertips you report.

  • Test your sugar with different meters.

  • Please if you can get a one touch basic. it uses photometric testing and is the most accurate. They are no longer available but you can get them on e-bay. I was taken by ambulance because I had passed out from low blood sugar 32 but the ultra meter said 300 . I wear a medical alter bracelet now showing to only test with serum blood no ultra meters! If you have blood disorders the ultra meters are not accurate at all!

call write to congress telling them to bring back the photometric meter

  • Did you wash your hands? one morning I tested and I was 341 so I took insulin to correct it, an hour later I was 40 after taking a shower, so my hands were clean. I'm 100% positive it was from a late night snack i had that I touched which gave the false reading :-/

  • I have the One Touch Select meter. I've been taking my blood sugar 4 times in a row, within a minute, and it is all over the place, there has been a 50 point jump in sugar and I know this is totally inaccurate. I don't trust the meter. I ordered a new one and it is doing the exact same readings.
