Cont.: ...somewhat dampened! I can imagine there is a safety factor involved when glass explodes at 4,200 mph, and I shouldn't want it in my eye at that speed!

In the movie (based on the book) Oscar & Lucinda, they show Her receiving one as a Birthday gift, & although she likes it just fine the way it is, they demonstrate - quite forcibly - with a hammer & an ax it's unusual strength. When Lucinda takes a pliers to the tail, however, it explodes into a fine mist of billions of pieces; Wikipedia claims it's been tested at 4,299 mph! Awww .... but you couldn't see it! I read about it in Peter Carey's book Oscar and Lucinda. They didn't bother with the bucket of water.
