This is a short movie of the Tibetan Lama Dance at the Palyul Buddhist Retreat Centre in McDonough, NY, recorded 8-7-10.
The Lama Dance, or "Cham", is a sacred art in Tibetan culture and is considered very auspicious to witness. These hauntingly beautiful, mystical dances are performed not just for entertainment but also as religious rituals with deep meaning for followers of Vajrayana Buddhism. The ordained (monk) performers don brightly colored costumes and masks for the ritual ceremony. The dance represent an enactment of certain sacred rites pertaining to the countering of obstructive forces that hinder the life and well-being of the community. They are accompanied by other monks playing horns, cymbals and drums. His Eminence Khentrul Gyangkhang Rinpoche, head of the Palyul Buddhist monastery, oversaw this year's summer retreat and attended the Lama Dance. It was open to the public on this day and many community members got to see this sacred dance for the very first time. Other guests traveled many miles to attend.
