Of the several recordings of the Liszt sonata in B Minor by Alfred Brendel, most were studio recordings. However, live recordings are available which include his 1981 Carnegie Hall recital and this 1985 all Liszt recital video from Japan. He performs the Liszt sonata with fire and bravura and perhaps the audience helps to bring out a truly great performance.

In that section at 6.12 I love the way he manages still to get so much character out of it.

@FABrendel True he is so much better live, also it seems to give him a brighter sound.

Oh my god! Brendel recorded Liszt's sonata at least 3 times. Among them all, i think this rendition has some of the finest passages. It is incredible how this man has always a spark when playing live. Unbelievable interpretation and unbelievable technique to play this gigantic piece in such a flawless way... and live!
Maestro Alfred Brendel makes the world a better place, for sure.
Thank you rbprior!
