This is a video of the Cadet Battery at VMI firing our Korean War era 105mm howitzer on 9 December 2010. We fire this gun every evening except Sundays to signal the end of the duty day. "Retreat" is first sounded, then the gun is fired. "To the Colors" is then sounded as the colors are taken down and retreated by the VMI Cadet color staff. After the winter time change the gun is fired and the colors are retreated at 1700 but during the beginning of the Fall and end of the Spring semesters the procedure is done at 1815 during SRC (supper role call). I'm the one on the bricks and yes it was LOUD! The Cadet Battery uses aluminum-cased blank shells provided by the US Army and does not fire when classes are not in session. This is also the gun that the Citadel has tried to "tactically acquire" in the past.
