marriage actually has existed before the bible actually and there is evidence that there were gay marriages prior to christianity.
-
this is fucking brilliant. Loved it.

My solution: make marriage a religious matter varying per religion and then making a civil equivalent with a different label slapped on. Homosexuals can get all the benefits of marriage and conservatives have their way (in a technical sense), albeit with a loophole.
-
My point is that no religion owns it, since all peoples practice it, regardless of what they believe, including people who are not religious. The point of campaigns for gay rights in marriage is a campaign against letting religions dictate marriage rights to people. We want to keep it a civil matter, not a religious matter.

I agree that it should be left up to the church whether it wants to perform gay marriages or not. I hope it does. But the state should not interfere in religious matters.

The origin of marriage begin in China and was a contract between families for there offspring involving property assets and community alliances. Over the years marriage has been adapted to meet the needs of society and the aspirations of its citizens - its unfortunate that many religion have singled out <6% of citizens to be exempt from religious marriage however this should not prevent their relationships making the same commitment and receiving the safeguards
-
I think one has to recognize that the proposal is for civil marriage equality not religious marriage - In civil marriage the contract is purely about the exclusive commitment between the the two consenting adults and the legal commitment & responsibilities they make to each other - Marriage equality removes the gender component so that same sex couple can access it
-
You mean marriage? It was religious practice before the concept of secularism even existed.
-
No, it doesn't belong to religion. It is a secular practice which belongs to everyone, crossing religious distinctions and boundaries.
-
I say, yes.

even though i'm an athiest, i always took the stance, marrige is a christian constitution and the bible specificly denies the coupling of same-sex persons, therefore i was in support of same-sex civil partnerships, but not marriage.. but having watched this, it's really hit home, to stop being pedantic, allowing samesex marriage is about just making the playing field level for everyone. i always wondered why it needed to be marriage, why partnership isnt enough, then this just opened my eyes.

From an American, that's an impressive advert. I hope Ireland can be a leader in civil rights.
