Yushu (along with Lithang) has very famous Tibetan horse races (even yak races) every year and this was the main reason we were here. Alas, the Chinese Government cancelled the horse races in fear of more Tibetan uprisings and instead put on an all day Song and Dance Festival in Yushu.

The colors, songs and throngs of traditionally dressed dancers and locals more than compensated. Fantastic driver, Mr. Wang pushed me right into the press area to watch and video and, as the only two westerners (gosh, how could they tell), officials probably thought we were part of the press. The commonality of the world is evident with much of the Tibetan dancing, music and facial features that reminded us of Native American dances. Another unexpected bonus on this trip...

  • Nice video......BUT....Kham boys of China's wild west ???????? They are Khampas from Eastern Tibet !!!!!!

  • Yes they are but really...that's how they are referred to out there. I wish I was clever enough to come up with any phrases...

  • Oh my word, I was at this festival!! All my videos were taken from the other side of the circle- so this is a nice new angle :)
