Punishment for actual criminals should be decided by social compact, not by religious belief. Adultery, albeit nasty behavior is not a crime. Sexual offenses that are criminal are those committed without consent or upon a minor.

Men who want to beat women and/or cut off heads, hands, perform barbaric female genital mutilation , and stone women to death are using "religion" as an excuse to control women and to excuse their misogynist behavior.
