REM
Whats The Frequency Kenneth

What's the frequency, Kenneth?" is your benzedrine, uh-huh.
I was braindead, locked out, numb, not up to speed.
I thought I'd pegged you, an idiot's dream
Tunnelvision from the outsider's screen.

I never understood the frequency, uh-huh.
You wore our expectations like an armored suit, uh-huh.

I'd studied your cartoons, radio, music, TV, movies, magazines.
Richard said, "Withdrawal in disgust is not the same as apathy."
A smile like the cartoon, tooth for a tooth
You said that irony was the shackles of youth.

You wore a shirt of violent green, uh-huh.
I never understood the frequency, uh-huh.

"What's the frequency, Kenneth?" is your nenzedrine, uh-huh.
Butterfly decal, rearview mirror, dogging the scene.
You smile like the cartoon, tooth for a tooth
You said that irony was the shackles of youth.

You wore a shirt of violent green, uh-huh.
I never understood the frequency, uh-huh.
You wore our expectations like an armored suit, uh-huh.
I couldn't understand.
You said that irony was the shackles of youth, uh-huh.
I couldn't understand.
You wore a shirt of violent green, uh-huh.
I couldn't understand.
I never understood don't fuck with me, uh-huh.

ENJOY!!!

  • Mensch! Those were complicated lyrics and now that I see them written, not anything as what I thought from hearing them all these years...

  • @fartlek55 There was a band I heard in Northern Ontario who did a great version of "it's the end of the world as we know it" When they came back a year later I requested the song. The lead singer groaned because the lyrics were so hard to get right. They did the song though and it was great. Kudos for them. It was Red Lake Ontario, circa 1987.

  • objects in the rearview mirror from the distant past is closer than it seems

  • vengence is a horrible thing because it revolves in places extremely dark where hope doesnt seem to spring eternal.

  • The idiots dream is the American scheme that isn't all whats it seems and how they sell it to you in our cultures perceptions reality are two diffirent things. forgive my grammer but doesn't everything seem to run together?

  • what is this song about??

  • 6490 Khz, 23:30 america

  • @jaxanemt2 Dan Rathers was attacked by a mentally ill person who continually hit Rathers while asking "What's the frequency, Kenneth? What's the frequency Kenneth?" Dan Rathers reported these details of his assault the following day on CBS, much to the puzzlement and perplexity of viewers. Rathers' reporting his assault became as much of the story as the actual assault itself (if not more so).

  • Does anyone know what inspired the song?
