These are the original words of Emily Dickinson.

There are different versions which were "cleaned up" for publication by well-meaning editors and entitled "The Chariot" (Why? It's a carriage) Suspect anything with a missing stanza or which tells of children "wrestling in a ring"

I have no idea what it means or whether there's any literal sense in it at all. However it does convey what it must have been like to be Emily Dickinson.

  • Does anyone know of one of her poems that begins "I drank one draft of life, and I'll tell you what I paid, precisely an existance, the market price they said"

  • @iceland69able Use Google or similar to find "I took one draught of life". All the best, Tom.

  • You can sing this poem to the tune of Gilligan's Island.

  • I love Emily Dickenson's poetry. I have read much of it & I just love her rhyme & rhythm & her beautiful soul. She had such a strange little life...but left behind so much.

  • This sounds different than the one I read in school. Are there different versions, especially the last two lies?

  • Thanks to Tom at spoken verse. I was beginning to think I'd never find the poem again. draught instead of draft..thanks again
