Slide show of the old Mission, showing some of its art, artifacts and environs. This mission was the tenth of the California missions to be founded by the Spanish Franciscans. It was established at the Feast of St. Barbara, Dec. 4, 1786. Padre Fermin Francisco de Lasuen raised the cross and placed Padre Antonio Paterna in charge; Paterna put up the first buildings and made the first converts. The original buildings were of adobe, and "unpretentious". Prior to the Spanish arrival, only the Chumash Indians inhabited the area. They were hunters and gatherers oriented to the sea.
