Yes you are missing something. The key is to ask why he would choose to paint like this (and it is a choice) and have the balls to show it. Then take a closer more sensitive look. There's definitely a bit of a Fuck You attitude going on but more importantly he is attempting to find some untapped beauty in the apparently unimpressive, mundane and ugly. Once you get that they start becoming extraordinarily beautiful and defiantly impressive. Some will always look useless, but that's fine too.

It's funny. When a painting child is told "no, that isn't what x looks like, it looks like y", something seems robbed of them, an untainted lens. I've always seen this rare species of artwork as a wiping of the lens.

I thought I was shit at painting but i'm stunned at this work by Neal Jones, I must be missing something. Someone enlighten me as to why this is any good.
