Rosier actually had some serious kickboxing credentials and was probably the most well-known martial artist out of all the fighters going into UFC 1. It's a shame that he has to be judged by this performance, being that he came out of retirement just to compete in the first UFC.

Gordeau was good, but in terms of technique and credentials there have been much better strikers in MMA. Maurice Smith is a good example, and he only came in a few years later.

@Rnt911 And to think Royce got mad after the fight when Gerard bit him . He said to Gerard I tried to fight you like a man and bullshit , fighting like a man is on your feet , not going to the mat because it's the only way to win for the grapplers back then and even now .

@double42 I agree on that one . I saw his K-1 record and was mostly against low level competition . He competed as a regular boxer and his record was awful , and saw him in a fight against a very low level competitor in a boxing match and he was completely dominated . I'm surprised he won against Frazier who was a 4 time Karate Champion and had a 17-2 record as a kick boxer .

@double42 I think Gordeau legitimately had more skill than Rosier. Rosier was a decorated kickboxing champion, but he did not fight in venues that had much talent (From what I've seen of him, at least).

How many think the outcome could have been different if Kevin Rosier had his first fight against Gerard Gordeau ? Kevin came out so strong in the first fight and took everything his opponent hit him with , yet against Gerard he was totally destroyed . Was in really because his defense is down or he was worn down from the first fight .

The thing is, this was the first UFC. There was no one on the planet well-suited to commentate for an MMA fight back then.

Even though he wouldn't have a chance in this fight, even if he was 5 years younger (At the time of this fight Gerard was actually 3 years older than Rosier). Gerard used his amazing technique, watch how he doesn't KO him at first but waits till Rosier's defence is totally down and then stomping him in the guts with a heel. Rosier reminded me more of a New Yorker with streetfighting skills than a pro MMA fighter at that event.
