  • $168 (for the toy car) in 1953 would probably be around $3000 in 2009 dollars. A very expensive toy for the kid who has everything...that car would definitely be under Richie Rich's Christmas tree.

  • This segment was first seen in late November 1953, during the period Garry presided over his easy-going weekday variety show [1:30-2pm(et)]. It was "loose", and thoroughly enjoyable: there'd be musical numbers, comedy sketches, a chat or two, and anything else Garry and his cast {Durward Kirby, Denise Lor, Ken Carson} thought appropriate for "Mrs. Average Housewife", including this preview of "new Christmas toys". Hoover was one of the show's regular sponsors...

  • Ira,

Per usual, youve done it again. Bravo. you have managed to produce some of the most precious memories one can have while also giving us a lesson in ad, tv and marketing history. Keep em coming pal.

  • Nice post, thanks.

But watching it through the lense of The Hidden Persuaders, Madmen, and our modern Affluenza, it has a little bit of a darker feel to it, if you know what I mean.

    Cheers
