Son Stimming

I don't stop my kid when he stims...i actually sit down and do it with him--when he spins things, flaps, growls...whatever--and I get such great eye contact from him and he actually stops, looks at me and smiles, because he sees that I understand him. They stim because they can control that and it makes them feel safe and when I stopped my son from stimming he'd get so angry, so when i just let him be and be himself he was so much happier and a lot of his stimming lessened.

my son bangs his head on his pillow at night. He's 5 and he told me it helps him to feel better. I told him that's fine. As long as he only does it at home and on his pillow. And eventually he will have to find something else to make him feel better if he wants friends to sleep over.

This is evil and is the exact reason why agencies make their employees sign a form saying that no participants are allowed to be photographed. (like the one i work for) in the wrong hands, this could be terrible for your son in highschool. guess your need to connect with others is more important than connecting with your son

on my page please watch Autism Angel. A non verbal teenager who explains stemming and how it releases the input. very fascinating and inspiring. My son stems nightly...i now realize its his release at the end of a day. He is an honor student and non verbal. he deserves to unwind the best way for him

@aquarianbabe I do the same thing ^__^ My son's eye contact also improved when I joined in.
A lot of my son's stiming is not ok out in public. When I see that he needs it we will find a safe place to do it. I've noticed that he does it less in public when he gets enough "out of his system" at home and within a schedule. Like after school before and after challenging taskc etc. That way he knows when he can really let some steam off.

He looks so happy! And to think that some kids are forbidden to do this in school.

Wouldn't a ton on Occupational Therapy help?

I am diagnosed with Asperger's, and I started talking at a normal age.
I do this hand flapping, jumping, running in circles, and also verbal stimming, for example saying the same word over and over again...
I have quite a lot of typical autism symptoms; but somehow I completed school without really big problems.
Thank you for sharing this. My son has aspergers & started stimming at age 2.
I believe they stim for a good reason...to regulate their sensory dysfunctions, so I do not discourage my son when he feels the need to stim. I don't understand why some schools & professionals say to stop them. I think that is a recipe for melt-downs.
Do you mind if I embed this on my myspace page?
Again, TFS. Blessings, & good luck to you!

jackie75,
I agree with you about stimming, my son doesn't do it in public so I let him do it at home within reason. I don't mind if you use this on your myspace page.

The way therapists have described it to me is a way for him to release energy and a way to calm himslef down. He does it too when he is happy, like in this video, it's just with my son he will want to do it for hours if we let him, and what he is doing in the video isn't socially accepted behavior, I love my son for who he is but I also know how cruel the world can be.

It usually doesn't bother me, it only bothers me when he wants to do what he is doing in the video for hours, and gets upset at us if we ask him to stop or do something else. You give me something to look forward to, thanks for commenting:)
