Commissioned as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Royal Festival Hall, this work explores the the post-war social dance scene from the ballroom to the disco and club. As dance space in the West End became prime- value real estate, physically smaller dance venues with larger drinking areas became the norm. The embracing of salsa as a club partner dance, is just one of the many examples of how social dancers adapted to the changing spaces. Ballroom mutated into Dancesport and migrated to the Leisure Centres and municipal sports complexes.
Tom and Brian feature as the amateur dancers bringing the essence of 'Cafe Society' across the river, from Leicester Square to the South Bank. Anyone who was at Xavier's Thursday night classes there, will immediately recognise the Saturday Night Fever routine, when the evening would shift from teaching to dancing.
