The devil is confronting -as his alter-ego- with his own vision of human evolution: the coming of man with his own ethical standards. However, like mankind itself, Ivan is terrified and not ready to live in a world in which everything is permitted. Although he wants to clinch to this idea for justifying his patricidal thoughts, he loses himself in this nihilistic worldview. Deciding ones own morality seems to be too much a burden for a mortal.

Subtitling could use some work.
I preferred the clip without them.

MARAVILLOSO!
This looks like an excellent adaptation of this brilliant novel, and this is one of my favourite scenes. I also enjoy the Pro and Contra chapter where Ivan and Alyosha discuss the nature of evil and Ivan tells the story about the Grand Inquisitor. Classic stuff, there is nothing of this stature present in the modern world now.
