I know that it was probably done for dramatic purposes, but you never had to buy a ticket for the Staten Island Ferry. Before they eliminated the fare for the ferry in 1997, there used to be turnstiles at the entrance to the Whitehall Ferry Terminal in Manhattan.
The window where they are "buying tickets" for the Staten Island Ferry is actually where you would go to buy tickets for the ferry to the Statue of Liberty!
