Rainy in the Hospital with Get well soon cards!!!

This is my daughter, Rainy. She is in the hospital for a massive infection that we believe was caused by her shunt. The shunt is a mechanical implant that is designed to relieve pressure from her head and release it into her body cavity. What probably happened is that the shunt tubing punctured the wall of her intestines, releasing massive amounts of bacteria into her body. The bacteria that is helpful for digestion can be very destructive if it gets anywhere else in the body. The infection was so severe that the bacteria began to penetrate the walls of her abdomen and in one case a place near the liver. When it penetrates, the body reacts by making the cell walls around the infection hard and covering the opening. This is called an abscess and the body will flood the abscess with white blood cells in order to kill the bacteria that is encased within it.

Rainy's classmates all got together and made cards for her! It was so nice of them. Rainy is enrolled in school, but hasn't gotten to go yet this year as she has been hospitalized for almost 3 weeks now. Her friends remember from last year that she likes rainbows, chickens and things that are "Shiny, Shiny!" We saw that on an episode of My Gym Partner is a Monkey years ago and she still says it all the time!

I have been spending my weekends with Rainy because I have to work out of town all week. I really love seeing her and can't wait for the weekend!
