Bill 18-482, the Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Equality Amendment Act of 2009
In summary: we applaud the Councils intention to recognize same-sex marriage as well as religious freedom; however, we oppose the discontinuation of the Districts domestic partnership registry. Ceasing to register domestic partners is a bad idea because the registry provides important rights and protections for people who are not eligible to marry, because many people who are eligible to marry are better served by registering as domestic partners, and because no public purpose is served by taking away the right to register from an entire class of potential partners.
