I found this on one of my tapes amongst the numerous Rainbow episodes I have. Cockleshell Bay was produced between 1980 and 1986 (with repeat showings of some earlier episodes as late as 1987 as part of CITV) and featured the everyday adventures of twins Robin and Rosie Cockle who lived at The Bucket and Spade, a seaside guest house run by their parents.

In this episode it is a freezing cold day and Robin and Rosie go outside to explore their frost-covered garden. They find the water in a bucket has frozen solid. Robin manages to get the ice out of the bucket and when he looks through it he tells Rosie it is like looking through a window and how it makes her look wibbly wobbly. Then Robin and Rosie take turns pretending they're deep sea divers. Rosie doesn't watch where she's going though and falls over, dropping and breaking the ice. The twins then go to see their friends, Mr Fingle and his pet donkey, Fury. Mr Fingle tells Robin and Rosie about how he used to go ice skating when he was a child and the fun he used to have. Robin and Rosie leave Mr Fingle to attend to Fury and go to see their other friend, the old seadog, Mr Ship. The children find a frozen puddle and pretend to skate on it, but they both slip over onto the ground. Mr Ship hears the children playing and comes out to greet them. He tells the twins about how cold it was when he used to sail the Barents Sea inside the Arctic Circle and how he had to hack the ice off the sails of his ship. Then Mr Ship and the twins have fun sliding on the ice. Gran Routy comes to tell Robin and Rosie their lunch is ready, but sees how much fun they are all having sliding on the frozen puddle and then joins in as well. She slips over knocking Mr Ship onto the ground too. Everybody laughs at the fun they've had sliding on the ice and then the twins go indoors for their lunch of hot homemade soup and cheese and chutney sandwiches.

  • It's wonderful to see an actual episode of this in full, as they only used to show small clips of 'Cockleshell Bay' in early 1980s Rainbow episodes. Thank you so much for sharing this Peter, I really enjoyed it :)
