in traditional texture filtering, texture resolution is reduced as objects get further away.
anisotropic filtering reduces the texture resolution in one dimension only (width or height), depending on the orientation of the object in game.
imagine your are looking down a corridor, the texture on the floor will only have its height reduced while the texture on the walls will only have its width reduced.
the term "anisotropic" means "directionally dependent".
