IONTACH: Limerick's Lamentation (trad.) / Tim Moloney's (trad.)

Forum 2, München, 21.10.2010

Siobhán Kennedy: low whistle
Anglika Berns: keyboards, shaker
Jens Kommnick: uilleann pipes, bouzouki

Jens first heard this Slow Air played by Kildare Piper Liam Óg O'Flynn. It is possible, that the lament portrays the story of the defeat of the Irish by William of the Orange in 1691 at the siege of Limerick and the subsequent departure of the Irish commander Patrick Sarsfield and his army to France. This was after the disastrous Treaty of Limerick which ushered in the Penal Laws that remained in force all through the 18th century. A long and sad story. In order to keep the atmosphere of this air we arranged the reel that follows in a soft and subtle way. According to Breandán Breathnach, this tune was first printed in the "Feis Ceoil Collection of Irish Airs" in the year 1914. It is called "Moloney's Reel" in that collection.

Uilleann Pipes by Robbie Hughes
Low Whistle by Colin Goldie
Bouzouki by Stefan Sobell
