Okay, 2 reasons why I think Silver's back story isn't as idiotic as you say it is:

1: Silver has been living in this post-apocalyptic world his whole life. I'm pretty sure he'd take any chance he could to fix it. Plus, I don't think he would know what an evil person looks like. (Mephiles never mentions to Silver that his last name is Dark, so that argument is moot)

2: This isn't the first time in the Sonic games something like this has happened. (Knuckles, I'm looking at you)

As few as there are, this game DOES have power ups: power sneakers (one in Sonic´s wave ocean, one in Silver´s Kingdom Valley, one in Shadow´s town mission... 8 I think, and some more in multiplayer stages), that blue crystal that replenishes the action bar, the extra lives and the invincibility. Unleashed and modern Sonic in Generations are completely devoid of power ups (some people blame it on the boost, but Colors 3ds Generations and the Rush games had boost AND power ups so it´s no excuse).
