I can't fully enjoy all progressive stuff, but a lot of it still has that classic drive if you look hard enough. As a banjoist that likes a bit of everything, I definitely pay my dues to Scruggs style. It's a great foundation for 1st position, but it is a bit limiting, and I find that the melodic style is more versatile and makes fore more effective use of the entire neck. A well-rounded player should be fluent in both, and there's no better way to land a melodic run than in a Scruggs lick.

Back in the day when the Opry could only afford one microphone.

I apologize. I believe this was the Opry, because of the applause and background. Most of these clips of F&S, though, are as stated above.

This was not really the Grand Ole Opry itself. It was a T.V. show sponsored by Martha White, which was also a sponsor of the Opry. The Grand Ole Opry was a live radio show put on every Saturday night in the old Ryman Auditorium in Nashville broadcast through WSM, a clear channel station. We listened in Woodville, MS where I lived as a child. We had static, but the Opry was a Saturday night tradition in our home. These F&S shows are available for purchase on DVD.
