Over six years, negotiations on Iran suspending its uranium enrichment programme, which would be at the heart of any weapons programme, have got nowhere. US bilateral, Security Council and EU sanctions have restricted and delayed aspects of Iran's nuclear activities, but have not caused Iran to negotiate on the terms offered. Jon Davies will set out the logic of British policy and why this remains the best way to promote regional security and protect the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Peter Jenkins will argue that the present mix of policies which has been rendered obsolete by developments since 2006, is doomed to fail, and entails costs the West can ill afford; and will go on to suggest better options.
