Trying to get Californians to make serious earthquake preparations is like trying to pull teeth so I can only imagine what it's like in a part of the country where the last earthquake bigger than a 6.0 was in 1895. It's not in the public's mind and makes it hard to get expensive retrofitting approved.

A report on the ShakeOut website (announcements section) explains why Drop, Cover, and Hold On is the recommended action during an earthquake. It is not always the "big one" that causes injuries. Smaller earthquakes (6.5 and below) can cause serious injuries by things like bookshelves, electronics, etc. falling on you. It is important to know what to do. Running out of a building where things like brickwork are falling is not any safer than being under a sturdy object such as a desk or table.
