I agree with you. NPR would be fine without government funding.

But are you seriously saying that you would like to pay all of your taxes except for the 28 cents that goes to NPR? I am not making that up -- that is the exact amount per American that went to NPR in 2012.

Meanwhile, $117.15 per American went directly to Lockheed Martin. One company. Just a slice of the defense budget costs more than the pre-natal vitamins needed to prevent birth defects for 47 American women.

You can have a fascist police state with a balanced budget and relatively low taxes. Cops, surveillance, military, border walls, clandestine agencies; all these things are technically cheaper than Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, public education, student loans and unemployment assistance, and they're all catnip for conservatives (as long as it's a Republican in the White House, of course).

"Big government" isn't always about high expenditures.
