In the fall of 2002, Nickel Plate Road made a final run at the Indiana Transportation Museum. The locomotive will remain cold until the funds are raised to complete an FRA-mandated overhaul.

This segment is featured in Trackside episode 135 along with Algoma Central's Agawa Canyon camp car.

  • 736berkshire in 2002 nickle plate road 587 made a final run. Now how was it least back in service in 2005?

  • The 587 is not back in service. The 765 is.

  • @tracksidefan when did 765 return to steam? the year

  • NKP 765 returned to steam in October 2005 with trial runs the following March.

  • @tracksidefan did 765 make any runs in 07 or 08

  • @Strasburg1991: None that I am aware of. I think it took awhile to get the financials and logistics back up to speed after the engine was done.

  • I like the steam locomotives from the Nickel Plate Road. They have a basic design and they don't look too crowded unlike other steamers with smoke deflectors, air compressors on the front of the boiler, and big and bulky builds.

  • They did a REALLY GOOD movie about 587 where some kids save her from scrap. I wish it was YT.

  • @yerkees9891 yes i will say there not the same the reason is lima made 600 serious engine which were actually order by NKP unlike 587 was and the tender on 587 right now is the one used on the 600 serious locomotives trust me i have a good comparison i work on both 587 and 765 so i know the difference between the 2 tenders

  • I'm not sure if a lot of people know this, but there is an effort dedicated to restoring another Nickel Plate Mikado in the form of NKP 624.

  • I am very suprise that the 587 will be back soon. It seems like the people who made the movie 587 The Great Train Robbery need to remaster the movie and release it again to have the 587 known again. Every time i watch the movie i think of the 587.

  • With that, I wish the Indiana Transportation Museum the best of luck in keeping NKP #587 in good working order. And also, I did enjoy seeing this locomotive in action on DVD.

  • the tender is not identical to the berks tenders. the berks carry 22 tons of coal not 20 tons the 600 used the 20 ton tenders which were built at lima but the tenders are not the same. remember 587 is a light mike and the 600 were not a light model and were made later

  • but the tender is identical to the ones used on the berks. You gonna try and say that all berk tenders are mike tenders?

  • Great video but it would have been better without that idiot Mike Mettert. He was one of the three stooges that dropped the engine when raising it to service the front pilot bearings...thanks mike...you moron. The best thing that could happen for this loco is for you to stay away.

  • This tender is from NKP 639, which is still here.

  • you forget me!

  • Jacob broke his arm.

  • first of all, 587 is in america. It's not going overseas.

  • This engine IS a 2-8-2 Mike. and it will be back before 2017, mark my words.

  • It's not a Berk! It has a berk tender because NKP 639 needed a operational tender(which 587 had) and they switched them.

  • There is a possible connection going in soon, watch carefully for news concerning CSX and Eli Lilly

  • No, this loco was built as L E & W 5541 and in 1924 was changed to NKP 587.

  • yes. the museum also starred in a movie " Going all the Way" about two men coming from St. Louis to Indianapolis in the 50's.

  • by the way the tender now is from a lima mikado not lima berkshire. the tender is from one of the 600 series mikados.

  • while the 765 did the new river and double heading the 1225 the nickel plate DID A TRIPLE HEADER IN THE FRONT OF TWO N & W ENGINES

  • Yes, so far they are riveting the boiler. There really isnt mych riveting left to do, but if you came down I'm sure you could find some sort of job to fix her up! Never is there boredom while volunteering at the ITM.
