He could have done some damage control by quickly acknowledging the mistake.  "Base hit...no it hangs up and is caught..." and then blamed it on the white roof like the visiting players do.

Pretty hilarious screwup and really confused me because I didn't even think it looked like a hit off the bat. I can't imagine how confusing this was to a casual baseball fan.
