For 7 years I single handed my Newport 27' sloop in San Francisco bay; and safety is first. I built and installed a hard dodger, all lines leading aft to the cockpit, self-tending jib, reefing lines from cockpit, safety lines along the boat, and the first order of the day was my inflatable life preserver and being tied down to the boat with double lines. I never made a single exception no matter what, and it paid off several times. One mistake is one too many.

I really hope you were wearing a PFD and had an EPIRB. A good friend of mine was just lost, he fell over board while sailing solo and died. Mike will be remembered and act as a reminder that maybe we aught to call another person to go out with...

I always wear my automatic inflating life preserver while single handling but most people don't have EPIRBs on 25' sailboats on the Chesapeake Bay including me. You're always within sight of land and I have my VHF. Some friends were sailing their boat not far behind me that day as well. I still often have to single hand though because others cannot always join me. Sorry to hear about your loss; it is a reminder that it can be dangerous out there.
