I've liked Muggsy Spanier (1901-67) and his Dixieland recordings for a long time, and luckily his recordings are never that hard to find. I've got quite a few by now, and they never really let me down. It's happy music and it's played with joy and panache. Here we get to hear Muggsy Spanier and his ragtime band's version of the Clarence Williams tune "I wish I could shimmy like my sister Kate". The song was originally published in 1919, and for those who don't know what "shimmy" is, I can inform you that it was a very popular dance at the time. This is a English HMV pressing, and a release in the "Swing Music 1940 Series" and it was recorded in New York for Bluebird originally, November 10, 1939.
