Carry lots of batteries, and several spare memory cards (unless you're livestreaming, of course). Make sure you have a sturdy camera that you're comfortable running with, and that's light enough that you can hold it up for an hour or more. When you swap out your memory cards, don't put them in a camera case. Put them in a secure pocket, preferably a hidden one, or a case labeled "empties" -- this will reduce the risk that they will be "lost" if you're arrested.

Thanks Corey for this insightful tutorial on the power of citizen journalism. I think you left out something important though, and should cover this in a followup: How to deal with video of activists doing something that could be interpreted as illegal by the state, or that gives credence to claims we're all thugs. Obviously people doing risky actions should cover faces etc, but sometimes it's spontaneous and even self-defense actions can be used for repression. Thanks for your thoughts.
