Everything But The Girl, in the moments before they went all drum 'n' bass, did a terrific version of this song. I think, if memory serves, it's on the same CD single as their version of "The Only Living Boy In New York".

@clarkyboy67 I didn't read your original comment because I don't give a shit what you have to say. And it's really annoying reading comments in which the person has no since of grammar and uses NO punctuation other than commas.

@clarkyboy67 I have neither the time nor the desire to check if someone's account is active or not. What difference does it make anyway? You read it, didn't you?

As I heard the Weller version first its the version I connect with most, the studio version is glorious. I have tried but just cant connect with the Neil Young original and I dare say it is vice versa for Neil Young fans. I have no probs with that, each to their own. Cant see the point in nit picking with the lyrics ...

I agree, 'fly away beside you', makes no sense at all. Can't beat the original.

Wow. I see comments about covers being better than the original on youtube all the time. In my opinion, it's not possible to perform a song better than the person who invented it. plus, this one is utterly ridiculous. I respect Mr. Weller and he's done great things in rock, but he doesn't even have the lyrics right. Why would a metaphorical bird be flying BESIDE one they've just left? This is actually awful the more it goes on. Whoever said this was better should evaluate their taste in music.
this is a wonderful song, and the lyrics are beautiful..i love both versions, Neil Young sings it, with ease, but i think Weller gives it that soulful edge, as he does with most covers.., its a very moving performance, and this just left me .with a tear in my eye...!!!! .. I could listen to Weller for hours...

I love this song, both versions, Im a great fan of Weller, ( as said in my old account BRR comment), but I too, have never understood why the lyrics were changed, its a song of sadness, someone leaving,i think Weller always makes covers his own, I love Studio 150,Early Morning Rain is a great take by Weller, as for Neil Young, there was a great version of Birds, on utube, but its been removed.
