Death (and Life) masks are incredible! Just think of the sum total of human genius you were able to see in a few minutes! Perhaps its because death has taken away their defenses, but Death Masks seem to provide incredible insights into the character of their former owners. It is as close as we will ever get to meeting these giants, and I consider it a priveledge to have seen this. Thank you for making this.

I used this in a dnd session, I had a homeless dwarven cleric singing it in the streets. Slowly overtime I worked in atmospheric effects that created a foreboding sense of doom. Finally when the song stopped my players were all looking at me with terrified faces as I had a cloaked silhouetted figure slowly approach them in the empty city streets. Death was near.
One of my finer moments as a dungeonmaster.

When I was visiting some family in New Orleans I saw an elderly homeless dude crying out this wonderful dirge. Needless to say, he got his money.

Yes, and No.Raised in the BG & Gospel culture, let me explain without passing Judgement on anyone else, or arguing with anyone:It's "Yes" because many bluegrass and Gospel songs deal with death issues, especially the inevitability of Death and being ready for it."No", because to us Death was not something to be dreaded, but to be READY for. Life was to be lived to the fullest, enjoyed to the hilt but lived RIGHT, i.e. in touch with "God" and at Peace with family & Friends. Death was Liberation.

So Lenin was more on a neutral side, even though he made Russia a better place. Stalin is a sinner, but your right Lenin is a saint.

I agree with you 1manuscriptman. I would love to see and hear the great Ralph Stanley sing in concert. And the guy should remember that when this song was recorded Mr. Stanley was 73 years old. And as many of us get older the voice starts to tremble and crack a bit. Still sounds as good as ever to me though.
