Taking a quick break from the Saltwater Rebuild series to do a tour of the "My Reef Creations MR-2" protein skimmer. Turtleman 221 requested more information about it, so I hope these videos answer that. Overall, I am extremely happy with the skimmer. There are a couple drawbacks which I will go into in part 2 (they are not drawbacks of the MR2 itself, but of the support system required), but overall, I think it's fantastic. You can find more information about it here http://www.myreefcreations.com/MR-2-Protein-Skimmer. Thanks to turtleman221 for the request. I eagerly invite any questions or other requests.

  • you need to lower your water level and turn up the air when you are running your skimmer. Turn the air up all the way then back down until you get small bubbles. From there adjust your gate valve. I've been using a skimmers like that for five years and it works for me.

  • fastfive5,

That's a really good idea. In my situation, I actually have to keep the air almost completely closed. This is for two reasons. 1) When I open the air up, a lot more air gets in, the bubbles actually get larger and the water inside the column gets very turbulent and becomes less effective. 2) When I open the air up more, it rushes in so fast that it makes a loud "hissing" or sometimes "whistling" sound which is very distracting. I really appreciate the tip though. I'll look into that

  • An other thing get some flex line that will fit on your air intake. run this line down to your skim mate collection bucket and attach it about an inch from the top. This will do two things it will quiet the air noise and if your collection bucket fills up it will kill the air and stop you skimmer.

  • Now THAT is a very clever idea. I think I will try that this weekend. Thanks!

  • Once again another great video!

  • Thanks for the kind words collin. The High Def version should be processed soon. Part 2 is also uploading as I type this

  • I am looking at the same skimmer, what GPH motor is needed for the input? I also have a 125 gal tank

  • I love your tank.

  • I have a DIY version of your skimmer. My water level with the air off is about a 1/3 of the way up the main tube. As for being turbulent that's what the main tube is for. The second smaller tube will settle things down. These types of skimmers are made for ripping water at high volumes. As for the sound, my skimmer with out the line to the air intake on it sounds like a jet taking off. Just my two cents hope it helps.

  • hey thanks alot for showing me this it really helped and i will be geting one here soon so i mite have a coupl questions in the futur.

    thanks again.

  • MASSIVE!!!!! gotta love skimmers!!!
