You´re mistaken.. a commercial, chess playing robot was already available in 1982. There are videos of the Novag Chess Robot here on Youtube, and you can get one for about 200 bucks on ebay. :)

under the table there is a special sensor that tells the cpu what pieces is there and this cpu make the arm to move where he thinks is the best move for him,this is possible to do
