A historical precedent that might prove a bonus for Occupy Wall Street

In 1932, a police and army attack on the Bonus Army of impoverished first world war veterans helped seal the New Deal Nicolaus Mills Nicolaus Mills guardian.co.uk, Saturday 19 November 2011 17.00 GMT
This Tuesday's pre-dawn destruction of the Zuccotti Park encampment of Occupy Wall Street by New York City police in riot gear has been seen by some as a serious defeat for the movement. A day after 142 Occupy Wall Street protestors were arrested and Zuccotti Park was cleared, the New York Daily News, which has been hostile to Occupy Wall Street since it began, reported, "Camp Zuccotti appears to be gone for good now."

But if history is any guide, the raid on Occupy Wall Street and the destruction of the tents and sleeping bags the protesters left behind is not likely to have the effect the movement's foes want. The Great Depression offers a striking parallel to this week's attack on Occupy Wall Street.

In 1932, a police and Army raid on the Bonus Army of first world war veterans, who had come to Washington, DC to ask for immediate payment of their Adjusted Service Certificates (whic everyone called their bonus), resulted in an Occupy Wall Street-like rout. But in the end, the vets were the ones who prevailed and gained public sympathy.

Wall Street Fears Occupy Wall Street?
Author: Stephen Alexander
Published: November 19, 2011 at 9:38 am
A prominent Washington lobbying firm, Clark Lytle Geduldig & Cranford, believes that the financial industry has much to fear from Occupy Wall Street. According to a leaked memo, the lobbying firm proposed to the American Bankers Association that "opposition research" on Occupy Wall street needs to be conducted to build "negative narratives" about the protests and politicians that are leaning towards supporting the movement.

The lobbying firm requested $850,000 to conduct the research. The memo claims that if Democrats win, then Wall Street loses. "This would mean more than just short-term political discomfort for Wall Street." Moreover, the memo asserts that Democrats aligned with Occupy Wall Street have "the potential to have very long-lasting political, policy and financial impacts on the companies in the center of the bullseye."

From the memo: Leading Democratic party strategists have begun to openly discuss the benefits of embracing the growing and increasingly organized Occuy Wall Street (OWS) movement to prevent Republican gains in Congress and the White House next year. We have seen this process of adopting extreme positions and movements to increase base voer turnout, including in the 2005-2006 immigration debate. If vilifying the leading companies of this sector is allowed to become an unchallenged centerpiece of a coordinated Democratic campaign, it has the potential to have very long-lasting political, policy and financial impacts on the companies in the center of the bullsye. It shouldn't be surprising that the Democratic Party or even President Obama's reelection team would campaign against Wall Street in this cycle. However the bigger concern should be that Republicans will no longer defend Wall Street comapnies — and might start running against them too.

  • People, send in a lot more high power camcorders to protect the protesters. People, you have to be the media for this movement, don't let them editing away the truths like their editing away our access to our own efforts, our resources, and our civil rights.

  • Just call in sick when it is not protect the protesters. The chiefs will eventually run out of resources or get caught by something because black mails corporation used on them get exposed.

  • Thank you Captain Lewis. I saw the film, "Inside Job" which you recommended when it came out and I'm glad you highlighted it. It is important.

  • @evanlongaccount This is true enough. The Stanford experiment done many years ago sheds some light on this; as well there are a disproportional number of individuals that have domination problems that are police. My suggestion is to bypass them, and attack (metaphorically) those responsible.

  • @tigerbutter360 No, a lot of cops really believe in the oppression they brutally unleash on us. That's been the case for a really long time.

  • The police are not the enemy; they are patsies to absorb the aggression that should be disengaged from falling into rolls, and organizing more effective strike actions. This is warfare against the people of the world, that should consider themselves as enemy combatants, as that is how the ultimately will be treated. Peaceful protesters get beaten down, Gorilla fighters cause damage where it counts. Please obey all laws.

  • Amazing.
