This is an NES game that was only released in Japan, although an English version can apparently be found. Unlike the first three, this game is more about the adventure than the platforming.
There are no bottomless pits, and you apparently have a health meter. You start with 2 HP, and it can eventually be raised to 8 HP. For every 8 fruit you find, you recover 1 HP. For any meat you find, you fully recover (Disclaimer: This is a common stereotype. Vegans have equal opportunity through veggies).
If you get hit by most enemies or hazardous objects, you lose 1 HP. However, there are some magic fireball enemies that deal double damage (alliteration). And if you lose all your HP, Game Over. You can save your game by sleeping in the house where you actually begin.
There are 6 bonus powerups in the game that are not mandatory, although they make the game a lot easier. The first one is just given to you - a teleport egg. Another one is a compass, to determine where you are on the map. There are 4 healing powerups I did not collect. A fairy fully restores your HP if you die. A heart recovers 1 HP. A potion recovers 3 HP, and a house takes you back home to save. All 4 of these disappear after one use, and you have to win them again if you want them.
And thankfully, the 4th game is not timed.
SPOILER ALERT!
I think the villain is an eggplant.
