All about Sharks with John McCosker | Pottery Barn Kids

Kids are always fascinated by sharks and other marine animals. They are always keen to know more about them. In this Pottery Barn Kids video, Scientist, John McCosker shares information about different types of sharks.

Sharks are very graceful creatures and are constantly agile. They slowly move across the bottom and can instantaneously speed up to 20 mph. Sharks are very important in the ocean as they are on the top of the food chain.

There are more than 400 different types of sharks. The smaller sharks are known as Cigar Sharks. Some sharks such as the Deep Sea Pygmy Sharks can live with little or no light at all. Leopard Sharks are spotted like leopards, they have rough skin because they have millions of little teeth in their skin called denticles, which are mainly used for defense and also allow them to swim a little faster.

Shark teeth are replaceable and are slightly different from each other. Tiger Sharks have serration like bread knives on their teeth, whereas the teeth of Cow Sharks have a different shape. The Megalodon tooth is enormous in size, but the Megalodon existed millions of years ago and were probably 40 feet long.

Sharks play an important role in keeping the ocean healthy. But unfortunately, thousands of sharks are hunted for their fins every year. John suggests everyone to spread awareness about their importance in the ocean.
