People have fear of rejection. Plain and simple

Unfortunately especially females are programmed with this thinking from the time we're born: we're supposed to wear clothes, make-up, hair styles, etc. based on society's standards. It's a sad statement when our worth is wrapped in the package society wants us to be in and most, as much as they abhor that package, are afraid to challenge it.
I think back through history and much of the advancements we made were born out of non-traditional thinking. Controversy is a good thing.

I agree to a degree however the more controversial your subjects the more likely you are to get negative response. It is hard to straddle the fence on any subject so if you feel uncomfortable about a subject why go public with your views about it. You open your self up to attacks when you do. If you are not ready to defend the topic or attack it then do not mention it. Let those who advocate the topics do their job and keep to the subjects you are comfortable with.
